[00:00:00] Hello, and welcome to another episode of the quest for new inspiration. My name is. Is Katie Maschler and this is the one-year anniversary special. I just want to take a little bit and thank every single one of you who have tuned in to listen left review or reach out to me, let them know. they love the podcast. It seriously meant so much to me.

For today’s episode. I got to sit down with one of the biggest inspirations of my life. My mom.

She is not only inspiring because she’s my mom, but she is. On numerous boards as well as a woman and a very man dominant industry.

She has taught me, so, so, so many things, and I cannot thank her enough for everything that she has done for me. I hope she inspires you as much as she’s inspired me.

Laura Meyer-Dick: My name is Laura Meyer, Dick. I am, I’m proud of university of Kansas Jayhawk graduate. [00:01:00] I earned my masters and my business undergraduate from U I have an amazing husband and we share a couple of businesses together and I have three grown daughters. Awesome.

KT Maschler: So as some of you can probably tell this is actually my mother.

so she has been one of the main inspirations in my life, along with my grandfather. So for the year anniversary, I thought it’d be kind of poignant to get my mom on the show. So if you want to kind of explain a little bit about like your general path, what inspired you to be on all these boilers that you’re on?

What inspired. Your general helping being.

Laura Meyer-Dick: Well, when I was five years old, I thought I wanted to be a veterinarian, but then I realized you had to see blood and animals suffer and I’m an animal lover, so that wasn’t going to work. And I always admired my father and he said banking was the best career ever.

So I went down the path of banking. I never considered anything else since [00:02:00] I was five years old. Your grandma actually has a notebook that says, what do you want to be when you grow up? And in kindergarten, I wanted to be a banker and I’ve been wanting to be a banker ever since. So I, went straight into banking after college and I learned that, um, that was a great.

Career to build relationships and get involved and give back to your community. And so that’s what I’ve done. I still work part time in banking, and I spend a lot of time working on not for profit boards handling some family farming travel agency. We have a liquor store. I tell people I have six part-time jobs, but my favorite one is being president of the Bueller school board.

And I’ve been on the dealer school board for 12 years. And that. My favorite job, because it allows me to give back to the most, to the

KT Maschler: community. Okay. So I have a question that didn’t really come up on my pre-questions, but since you are, and you did go to Hutch high, what is the draw to Bueller? What makes you love Bueller?

Laura Meyer-Dick: What makes me love Bueller is [00:03:00] our staff is amazing. Our admin team is amazing, and I think I have, they have been the biggest contributor in my growth path over the last 12 years. I thought. Pretty set in my opinions and set and what I thought I knew. And they have allowed me to grow, especially in the area of emotional intelligence and leadership skills.

And they amaze me with their creative ways to make a difference in people’s lives, especially children.

KT Maschler: Awesome. Okay. So when you’re on all of these boards, there’s gotta be some times when it’s a little less. Exciting than what it should be, where or a little bit hard. Where do you get that motivation to keep doing that and keep moving forward?

Laura Meyer-Dick: Well, I’ve been leading the school board through a pandemic. I never thought I would have to do that. my motivation comes from the people that work around you. Um, if you have great people that work around you. that really helps you stay motivated and you lean on each other and you support each other and you pull each other through to get [00:04:00] through it.

So usually I lean on my relationships, my hype person, as our superintendent, likes to say my person who can cheer me up and keep me going. I have a lot of hype people in my village. Do you have

KT Maschler: any particular people you want to call out that inspire you on a daily basis?

Laura Meyer-Dick: Well one, whenever your prior guests, Mrs.

Couch man, one of my inspirations, and she also got me, um, introduced to Tamra Lynn home, who is an executive coach who teaches based on the energy leadership principles. And I have become. Completely fallen completely in love with that program and thinks that it can make a difference in every area of your life.

And I’ve been studying that for about a year now. Yeah.

KT Maschler: And I have actually started that program as well with Tamra. So shout out to Tamra, she’s listening. I hope you’re going to be an eventual guest on my podcast.

[00:05:00]

KT Maschler: Um, what are some other tools that you use, or resources that you use to stay mindful and grounded in your.

Laura Meyer-Dick: I try to read my daily devotional, um, scripture when I, especially when I’m struggling, that can speak to me. Um, I like to read a lot of emotional intelligence book type books and leadership books, because no matter what the problem is, if you have the right tools, you can handle it and you can handle it at a level that does not make you stressed and react and fuel the problem.

You can actually figure out how to solve the problem. If you use a strong emotional intelligence.

KT Maschler: Okay. Do you have any, like go-to mantras when you’re trying to think of when you’re [00:06:00] struggling with something that you kind of repeat in your head or anything like. No,

Laura Meyer-Dick: I I’ve got this, which I got from a little girl who passed away and she was very close to me.

And no matter what she went through, she always maintained strength. So I’ve got this and I’ll just have to figure out there’s always one more than one way to skin a cat, the way to solve the problem and make things better. That

KT Maschler: is, I really disliked that analogy, but I’ll let, I’ll go with it. Um, okay. So last few questions.

Okay. so since you are my mom, um, your advice, maybe a little bit different for this, what would you, what is the advice that you would give your 25 year old self, if you were.

Laura Meyer-Dick: to learn, to be humble and, um, be vulnerable. And those are two lessons that I wish I had learned. I won’t tell you how many years ago it was 25, but just to be humble to listen and be vulnerable.

KT Maschler: Awesome. Okay. Any last piece of advice, just general blanket [00:07:00] statement, your go-to best piece of advice.

Laura Meyer-Dick: Um, never stop learning when you stop learning, you start dying.

And so I just try to learn something new every day. Okay. That’s what I think my dad did. And he was my greatest mentor. So I want to keep that going in my life. He didn’t stop learning even when he was 98 years old.

KT Maschler: Yes. And he is greatly missed. If you have not listened to episode six, I’m a heavenly 99.

That is an episode featuring both of our biggest inspirations are my grandpa. So, thank you so much for taking the time this morning to do this with me and you’re welcome. I’m super proud of you. Thanks.
